POCKRIDGE DANCEY
FAMILY
of Dublin, Ireland
My mother's name was Dancey, and she
came from Dublin. The earliest known
member of the Dublin family was Pockridge Dancey, my great grandfather.
The family was descended from
Huguenots who left France after the Revocation of
the Edict of Nantes in the 17th. century, and I have some names of family
members from the 17th. century, but nothing more until the 19th.
There was a Huguenot community in
Dublin with a burial ground off St. Stephens Green,
and legislation encourged Huguenots to settle in Dublin, but I do not know
when the family moved there.
The name is thought to come from a
village near Le Mans. Huguenots would attend their own
Church if there was one but in more recent times went to the Anglican Churches in
Ireland.
In living memory, my uncle and grandfather, worked as accountants in an Irish Railway
company.
I do not know of any surviving Danceys in Ireland but there may be some.
