POCKRAGE DANCY
(1812 - 1894) IRELAND > UPPER
CANADA (Ontario)
According to Irish Records the
spelling should be POCKRIGE DANCEY.
He came to Canada at age 12, with two elder brothers,
Edward and Thomas. Seems he was separated from his brothers
and whatever became of them is unknown (family lore.)
They came from County Armagh, Ireland, in 1924.
He was joined shortly after by a brother Richard and
a sister Jane. He first worked for Squire Delong near
Elgin, Ontario. When the Rideau Canal was being built he
drew blocks of stone from Elgin Quarries, which was used
to build the locks and horseshoe dam at Jones Falls. His pay
was two shillings sixpence per day - it is presumed that this
money also included pay for the oxen as well.
He settled on Lot 9, Con. 4, South
Crosby Township, Leeds County, Ontario.
This was the birthplace of his son John, John's daughter Ardella (my
Grandmother), my uncle Don and my father Stuart.
The farm was in the Dancy name for 88 years. Pockrage deeded
land for the Dancy School house which is now used as a
residence. Many of this Dancy line are buried in the
Halladay Cemetery in Elgin Ontario.
